France is one of the world’s leading wine producers, with grapes being grown in many regions since Roman times. Many of the most well-known grape varieties (including chardonnay, sauvignon blanc and shiraz) have their ancestral home in France; and many wine terms – from terroir to appellation – also originate there. With such a long history of wine production, it’s no surprise that the food and wine of France have evolved to marry so well together.
